Therefore when JESUS had received the sour wine
HE said, “It is finished!”
And HE bowed HIS head and gave up HIS spirit
John 19:30
I glorified YOU on the earth
Having accomplished the work
Which YOU have given ME to do
John 17:4
What did JESUS mean, when HE said “it is finished!”? HE meant HIS work on the Cross (Tit 2:11-14), HIS accomplishments before the Cross (Jhn 19:28), and HIS triumphs after the Cross (Psa 68:18, Eph 4:8, Col 2:15, 1 Cor 15:20-26, Rev 20:14) were completed.
JESUS CHRIST’s finished work of Salvation on the Cross was redemptive, rescuing, propitiating, and atoning:
HIS redemptive work meant HE paid the price to get us back (Rom 5:12-19). HE set us free by paying the ransom (Mrk 10:45, 1 Tim 2:5-6). HE saved (delivered) us from the slavery of sin and its penalties (Rom 6:23, Col 2:13-14). At HIS first coming our Beloved LORD JESUS CHRIST, paid the price at the cross to redeem our souls from the slavery of sin (Psa 34:22, Psa 130:8, Jhn 8:34, Eph 1:7, Col 1:14, Heb 9:11-15, 1 Pet 1:18-19), and the curse of the LAW (Gal 3:13, Gal 4:4-5). At HIS second coming, HE will redeem our physical bodies (Luk 21:28, Rom 8:23, Eph 4:30). The mortal and perishable, will put on immortality and imperishability (1 Cor 15:53-54).
HIS rescuing work as used in Col 1:13, meant HE forcibly took legal custody over our souls from Satan and his demonic hosts (Luk 11:20-22). And took captive our captors (Eph 4:8, Col 2:15).
HIS propitiating work meant through HIS sacrifice of HIMSELF HE made peace for us with GOD our FATHER (Rom 3:25, Heb 2:17, 1 Jhn 2:2, 1 Jhn 4:10). Only HIS sinless life could satisfy the requirements for peace (2 Cor 5:21, Heb 4:15, 1 Pet 2:21-22, 1 Jhn 3:5).
HIS atoning work meant once HIS blood covered over our sins (Rom 4:7-8), HE reconciled us with GOD (Rom 5:10-11, 2 Cor 5:18-21, Col 1:20-22). Atonement means to reconcile, pass over, or cover. And though the word “atonement”(or a variation of it) is used more than 91 times in the Old Testament, it is found only once in the New Testament, and only in the King James translation (Rom 5:11). And yet our Beloved’s atoning work is found throughout the New Testament with the words “reconcile”, “passed over”, and “cover”.
What did our Beloved JESUS CHRIST accomplish before HE went to The Cross? Isaiah prophesied about the work our Beloved JESUS CHRIST would accomplish before the cross in Isaiah 61:1-2, when he said:
The Spirit of The LORD GOD is upon ME
Because The LORD has anointed ME
To bring good news to the afflicted
HE has sent ME to bind up the brokenhearted
To proclaim liberty to captives
And freedom to prisoners
To proclaim the favorable year of The LORD
And the day of vengeance of our GOD
To comfort all who mourn
Twice, JESUS confirmed this prophecy about HIMSELF. When HE spoke one Sabbath in the synagogue in Nazareth where HE grew up (Luk 4:14-21), and when HE responded to the question John the Baptist sent to HIM by his disciples (Mat 11:1-5).
During our Beloved JESUS CHRIST’s earthly ministry, HE accomplished all ABBA FATHER sent HIM to do (Jhn 17:4). Indeed GOD’s Holy SPIRIT was upon HIM (Mat 12:15-19, Jhn 3:34, Act 10:38):
1) HE preached The Gospel to the poor or afflicted (Mat 4:23, Mrk 1:14-15, Luk 20:1)
2) HE proclaimed liberty to the captives (2 Tim 2:26, Jhn 8:31-36, Luk 19:1-10)
3) HE gave sight to the blind (Mat 9:27-31, Mrk 10:46-52, Luk 7:22)
4) HE set free the oppressed (Mat 17:14-18, Mrk 5:1-13, Luk 13:10-17)
5) HE proclaimed the favorable year of The LORD, or announced the time had arrived when GOD The FATHER would accept men made righteous through JESUS CHRIST (Isa 49:8, Mrk 1:14-15, 2 Cor 6:2, Gal 4:4-7)
6) HE proclaimed The day of vengeance of our GOD (Mat 11:21-24, Mat 16:27, Luk 19:41-44, Luk 21:20-22)
7) HE comforted all those who mourned (Mat 5:1-11, Luk 6:20-23, Jhn 16:16-22)
Additionally, from HIS conception to HIS resurrection, HE fulfilled prophetic WORD of GOD (Mat 5:17-18, Mat 26:51-56, Luk 18:31-33, Luk 22:37↔Isa 53:12, Mrk 15:27-28, Luk 23:32-43; Jhn 15:18-25, Jhn 19:24↔Psa 22:18; Jhn 19:33-37; Act 2:22-32↔Psa 16:8-11).
The Accomplishments of our Beloved LORD JESUS CHRIST continue…
Our children and their children will get in on this. As the word is passed along, from parent to child. Babies not yet conceived, will hear The Good News — that GOD does what he says.
Psalm 22:30-31 (The Message translation)
Sanctify them in the truth; YOUR WORD is truth.
As YOU sent ME into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
For their sakes I sanctify MYSELF, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.
I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in ME through their word.
John 17:17-20
Prophecies continue to be fulfilled
This Gospel of The Kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations. And then the end will come
Matthew 24:14
Global Summary: Several global missionary organizations reported, “As of September 1, 2019, The Gospel has been preached in 58.4% of the world.” This means that 41.6%, are still unreached (unreached people, have no believing Christians living among them to share The Good News of JESUS CHRIST). And when you compare the reporting of the global missionary organizations, to the announcement made by the United Nations on the same day, “the estimated world population (total number of humans currently living) is 7.67 billion.” That means, 3.19 billion people are still unreached.
We have all been called to build up the body of CHRIST (Eph 4:11-12), are you doing your part?
